2016 Audi S6


Depending on your viewpoint, Audi’s adherence to a single, consistent design theme across its entire range, from tiny coupes to large sedans, may seem either brilliant in its message or boring in its monotony.

Whatever the case, however, the 2016 updates to the S6 and S7 sport sedan and hatchback are minor, visually, but significant under the skin.

Minor rhinoplasty

At the nose of the new S6 and S7 you’ll find the same set of updates: the grille gets some new depth and slightly altered dimensions, as well as a chromed treatment (which can be optionally deleted for gloss black); the front splitter is slightly reshaped. The headlights get new daytime running light accents, as well. As a result of these changes, Audi says everything at the front, below the hood cut line, is new.

Swinging around to the rear of the car, a new honeycomb mesh insert in the rear bumper accents the S6 and S7’s sportiness; the S7 gets new trapezoidal exhaust outlets, while the S6 gets redesigned quad round outlets; and the tail lights are entirely new, just as they are on the new A6 and A7.

Inside the car, the S6 and S7 continue their nearly-identical-but-for-the-hatch theme, with HUD-equipped models getting a redesigned HUD housing; upgraded buttons and controls for better look and feel; and aluminum-look window and seat controls.

Not-so-minor heart surgery



A rise of 30 horsepower from the previous version’s 420 hp to the 2016’s 450 hp is significant, and all the more so thanks to the ample torque on demand at any point in the rev range. Paired with the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, also slightly upgraded for the 2016 model year, the 2016 S6 and S7 are provably quick.

The S6 and its twin-turbo V-8 scamper to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds—a figure the S7 matches. That’s a scant 0.6 seconds slower than the RS 7, and the wall of thrust moving the cabin forward through space feels more than ample.

Ultimately, it means Audi has taken a second pass at refining an already excellent car, and that means that everything that was good before is just a little better; things that may have annoyed are now just quirks. One thing that hasn’t changed: the MMI controller still rolls backwards. No matter how many Audis I drive or how much time I spend in them, my brain just can’t accept this orientation.

Behind the wheel, the S6 and S7 both deliver refined, confident ride and handling. The steering doesn’t communicate much, but then this isn’t a weekend warrior—it’s built for the daily grind, with a big splash of fun along the way. The adaptive suspension smooths out the ride around town, and tightens itself up for more spirited driving; the dynamic settings for throttle, transmission, and engine response likewise mellow or brighten the S6 and S7 with electronic ease.

2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat crash in Colorado


Deliveries of the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat only commenced a month ago but the injury toll is already mounting. The crash involving this lime green example is easily the worst so far; it happened on a stretch of road in Colorado.

There is little information surrounding the events but it is believed the owner only picked up the car from the dealer an hour before it ended up like this. Photos taken at the scene suggest the car skidded off the road near a bend and crashed head-on into a tree.

Fortunately, we hear no one was seriously injured. The same can’t be said for the car; as this image from the SRT Facebook page shows, this 707-horsepower muscle machine is likely to be a complete write-off.

We’ve driven the new Challenger SRT Hellcat and found that it delivers performance that will leave even those used to powerful cars awestruck, so this sad sight serves as an important reminder for buyers of such cars to always factor in their own skills and consider whether the cost of performance driving course should be included in their price estimations. It’s also a good reminder for everyone to stay safe over the Christmas and New Year break.

Puritalia Reveals 427 Roadster In Production Trim, Teases New Hybrid GT


Over the past couple of years there have been quite a few entrants in the premium sports car scene. One that manages to stand out from the crowd is Puritalia’s 427 roadster, which was revealed in its final form at a special event in Milan last week.

Puritalia is a sports car startup based in Napoli, Italy, and the 427, its first model, will be hand-built using traditional Italian coachbuilding methods. Power, though, will come from a 5.0-liter V-8 sourced from the Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F], making the car a tribute to the legendary Shelby Cobra, albeit with an Italian twist.

The chassis is a lightweight aluminum structure, to which carbon fiber panels and other composites are attached. This has allowed designers to keep weight of the car down, with Puritalia quoting a curb weight of just 2,535 pounds, split 50/50 front to rear. Meanwhile, the suspension is fully independent and utilizes adjustable Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs.

As mentioned above, power comes from a 5.0-liter V-8, and this delivers a peak 445 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque in standard trim. Add an optional supercharger and these figures leap to 605 hp and 472 lb-ft. Drive is to the rear wheels only, via a six-speed manual transmission and standard limited-slip differential (multiple final ratios are offered).

Helping to stop the 427 is a set of beefy Brembo brakes: 15-inch discs with six-piston calipers up front and 13.6 inch discs with four-piston calipers in the rear. Staggered wheels measuring 19 inches up front and 20 inches in the rear are used, and these come shod with grippy Pirelli P Zeros measuring 275/35 front and 335/30 rear. Unfortunately, no performance figures have been released.

Puritalia says the 427 has been in development for the past 30 months and that more work needs to be done before production can finally get underway, with the current aim being sometime in 2016. Still on the list is getting regulatory approval for the car in Europe as well as presentations at auto shows in other potential markets such as the Middle East and the U.S.

Just 427 examples are destined for production, with the first 35 examples to be special ‘Launch Edition’ cars. The expected price tag is 180,000 euros (approximately $220,000) before taxes. Once all the 427s are built, Puritalia will focus on its next model, a new GT sports car with a hybrid drivetrain. This second model will be called the GTQ and is expected on the market around 2018.

Like the 427, the GTQ will take inspiration from sports cars of yesteryear but utilize thoroughly modern internals. A mid-mounted V-8 will power the rear wheels while an electric motor will be used to power the front pair, creating a ‘through-the-road’ hybrid all-wheel-drive setup. Puritalia says the GTQ is being designed to deliver the highest driving experience both on the street and on the track, all while maintaining the brand’s distinct Italian flavor.

New Land Rover Defender to launch in 2016

The new Defender will be the most capable Land Rover ever built, according to Phil Popham, Jaguar Land Rover’s group marketing director.

Speaking at the recent Paris show, Popham said the long-awaited new model would have the biggest “breadth of capability” of any model to wear the Land Rover badge.

The claim emphasises the importance that JLR is putting on replacing the iconic Defender, which has its roots in the 65-year-old original Land Rover model.

JLR has, so far, succeeded in keeping the wraps on the likely styling and the engineering make-up of the new Defender. However, we do know that the styling of the new car has already been signed off.

The styling theme for the new model is thought to have been given the green light during the summer. This means that the new vehicle is unlikely to appear in production guise until the summer of 2016.

However, a sneak preview in the form of a concept car is currently being discussed. Potential debuts for a concept are next March at the Geneva show, at the New York show in the spring or at the Frankfurt show next September.

There’s also no news about the structure underpinning the new Defender, but it looks likely to be a version of the company’s aluminium monocoque with the addition of a substantial aluminium superstructure in order to make the architecture as stiff and rugged as possible.

This technique – mixing a monocoque passenger cell and a separate steel chassis – was used under the Discovery to great success but resulted in a vehicle that weighed more than two tonnes. Repeating the exercise in aluminium should provide even greater structural rigidity than the Disco 4, with much reduced all-up weight.

With the new Defender being pitched as “premium durability”, it will come with the new Ingenium four-cylinder turbocharged diesel and petrol engines as well as V6 engines, Autocar understands. They will be connected to eight and nine-speed automatic gearboxes as standard, but there is no definitive news on whether there will be the option of a manual transmission.

JLR is determined that the new Defender will be able to thrive in the world’s harshest conditions, to the extent that it will be able to ‘plug into’ existing component networks by using the same wheel and tyres sizes as Toyota’s Land Cruiser and Hilux.

Autocar has been unable to substantiate rumours that the new Defender also uses the same bolt circle diameter to make wheel replacement easier in places such as central Africa.

The premium durability theme for the new Defender extends to the interior. Land Rover’s design team is aiming for a cabin that is distinctly more upmarket and better made than that of the Land Cruiser, for example.

This, combined with the intention of world-class mechanical durability and off-road ability, should give the Defender a decisive difference in this market niche. The extra luxury and comfort should also make it more appealing to affluent urban buyers.


What’s behind the recent massive increase in Land Rover sales?

Product has been the driver. Six years ago, when the recession hit, we made the decision to cut costs but keep investing in new products such as the new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. We’ve gone from an annual cash outflow of around £1 billion to a similar amount as a cash inflow.

We’ve also seen a very high proportion of conquest sales with the two new Range Rovers, so we are pulling in customers who are new to the brand. There’s also a four to six-month waiting list for the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which shows the strength of demand.

In the future, we will have great manufacturing flexibility, with the two Range Rovers and the [next] Discovery being built on the same production line. Product demand drives our manufacturing strategy.

Why are profit margins so high?

We sell a very rich mix of vehicles. Buyers are keen to purchase a lot of the options and accessories on offer. We’ve also invested heavily in developing markets such as Russia and China. JLR sold 6000 vehicles in China in 2008. Last year, we sold 100,000 vehicles.

We are also seeing strong residuals for our models and that’s reflected in monthly payments. Even at the premium end of the market, buyers want to spend less running their vehicles. Total cost of ownership is a big issue.

The firm had entered bankruptcy protection in its native Netherlands earlier this month but has not been able to secure the bridge funding it needed to survive.

Victor Muller, company founder and chief executive, remains optimistic of restarting operations in the future.

“None of the ambitions we had when we founded Spyker 15 years ago have vanished as a result of today’s events," he said in a statement. "In 2000 we set out to establish a super sports car business from scratch with a global distribution and we achieved that. Over the years we undertook some daring ventures that left their marks on the company which in turn contributed to today’s demise.

"However, I would like to make clear that as far as I am concerned 'this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning', to quote Winston Churchill. I will relentlessly endeavour to resurrect Spyker as soon as practically possible and, assuming we will be successful, pursue our goal to merge with a high performance electric aircraft manufacturer and develop revolutionary electric Spykers with disruptive sustainable technology.

"This is the moment to express my gratitude to our customers, dealers, suppliers and of course our employees and Board. Their loyalty and support was vital to build the brand over the past decade and a half. They can count on us continuing to live by the Spyker axiom 'Nulla Tenaci Invia est Via' (Latin for 'For the tenacious no road is impassible')."

Spyker, which famously acquired Saab from General Motors in 2009 and oversaw its demise, filed “a voluntary petition for financial restructuring in an effort to address certain short-term operational and liquidity challenges” to a Dutch court on 2 December. The application was granted.

These proceedings are the Dutch equivalent of Chapter 11 in the US, which GM and Chrysler entered during the global financial crisis at the end of the last decade.

Spyker had been planning to launch a Porsche 911 rival, the B6 Venator. The mid-engined 375bhp V6 sports car was revealed in £125,000 coupé form at the 2013 Geneva motor show, and as a £135,000 convertible later that year.

An administrator had been appointed to Spyker to work with the company through the bankruptcy proceedings. It was protected from creditors during this time. The firm had seeking an external loan to pay wages and carry out day-to-day business, something which was not ultimately forthcoming, leading to the demise.

Only last month the firm was threatened with eviction from its factory by the landlord for failing to pay rent, dating back to the first quarter of 2014.

When Spyker entered bankruptcy protection earlier this month, Muller said: “Over the past few years, Spyker has faced a number of serious difficulties and challenges resulting from, among others, the legacy of the F1 era and the acquisition of Saab Automobile AB.

“Our management and board have been working very hard in the past 12 months on a restructuring plan that includes the execution of Spyker’s B6 Venator programme, an entry-level luxury sports car which will give a larger audience access to the Spyker brand, and the merger with a US-based manufacturer of high-performance electric aircraft, the exciting new sustainable technology of which will find its way into future Spyker automobiles.

“After careful consideration of all available alternatives, the company’s directors and management boards determined that a voluntary petition for temporary moratorium of payment was a necessary and prudent step and the best way to secure and use the financing necessary to maintain operations and allow for a successful restructuring of the Company.

“We expect to emerge from this restructuring a stronger, more innovative company that is well positioned for growth and profitability. We are proud of the consistent high quality of our automobiles and our valued customer and partner relationships.”

Eintracht Frankfurt grabbed a last-gasp point in extraordinary circumstances, sharing eight goals with Hertha Berlin after falling three goals behind.

Alexander Meier was once again Frankfurt's hero with two goals in stoppage time to salvage a point in a game Frankfurt were chasing from start to finish.

Anthony Brooks, Anis Ben-Hatira and Julian Schieber fired Hertha into a three-goal lead before Stefan Aigner and Haris Seferovic brought Frankfurt back into the game.

Peter Niemeyer added a fourth for Hertha and the game looked to be over until Meier's late brace earned Thomas Schaaf's men the unlikeliest of points.

There was no indication of what was to come as Frankfurt laid siege to the Hertha goal early on.

Their failure to turn their superiority into goals came back to haunt them as Brooks turned in Ronny's free-kick to give Hertha the lead and take the wind from Frankfurt's sails.

Ben-Hatira headed in another Ronny cross before Schieber finished clinically to make it three after 37 minutes.

Frankfurt managed to pull a goal back just before the break with Aigner converting Seferovic's pass, but not even the most optimistic of Frankfurt fans would have given them much of a chance.

That nevertheless started to look quite likely when Seferovic headed Makoto Hasebe's cross in, and with the fans now right behind them, Frankfurt again built up a head of steam.

Like in the first half, though, they were unable to make their superiority count and they found themselves two goals behind again with 10 minutes remaining when Niemeyer converted Ben-Hatira's pass from close range.

Frankfurt's body language suggested the game was over, but Meier had other ideas.

He headed in Anderson's cross as the game entered into stoppage time and, less than 60 seconds later, the comeback was completed by the league's top-scorer.

Frankfurt even had chances to add to the drama by finding a winner, but the fans in the Waldstadion nevertheless got their money's worth in a draw which had everything.

Paderborn - FC Schalke 04 registered only their third away win of the current Bundesliga campaign after hitting back from a goal down to beat SC Paderborn 07 2-1 at the Benteler Arena on Wednesday.

The Royal Blues were outplayed for large parts of the contest, but took their chances through Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Roman Neustädter to render Kaan Ayhan's 31st-minute own goal meaningless.

Paderborn didn't take long to find holes in Schalke's experimental three-man backline. An incisive move involving Alban Meha and Mahir Saglik yielded the first chance of the night, but Stefan Kutschke could only direct Mario Vrancic's superb left-wing cross over the bar. The Royal Blues had another lucky escape midway through the half, with Rafael Lopez's audacious overhead kick striking the foot of the post and rebounding to safety.

Andre Breitenreiter's side continued to ask all the questions and at last got the goal their endeavour deserved when Ayhan inadvertently turned home Kutschke's teasing cross under pressure from Lukas Rupp. Schalke had offered absolutely nothing as an attacking unit, but got themselves back on level terms late in the half courtesy of an unstoppable effort from Choupo-Moting - the Cameroonian international's ninth Bundesliga strike of the campaign.

Di Matteo turned to Felipe Santana in a bid to alleviate his side's obvious frailties in defence in the second half. The Brazilian threw himself into the action, heading narrowly wide at one end and scooping over his own net at the other. Schalke had the bit between their teeth as the hitherto subdued Klaas-Jan Huntelaar warmed the palms of Lukas Kruse, prompting a change in the Paderborn camp and the almost inevitable introduction of leading scorer Elias Kachunga.

The substitution gave the hosts a momentary lift as Rupp flashed an effort wide, before Schalke took what in the grand scheme of things was a hugely fortuitous lead. Christian Fuchs launched a long throw into the danger zone, Kruse opted to stay on his line and Neustädter applied the finishing touch to send the visiting fans into raptures. A nervy finale ensued as Paderborn summoned one last push, but Knappen custodian Ralf Fährmann did just enough to thwart Kutschke late on.

Wolfsburg snatched a point from their trip to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday after Naldo scored the final goal in a thrilling 2-2 draw.

The Brazilian defender punished struggling Dortmund for poor marking when he rose unchallenged to head home an inswinging corner with a towering header.

Ciro Immobile's stunning strike had looked to have given Jurgen Klopp's side victory at Signal Iduna Park, but they were unable to see Wednesday's game out.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put the hosts in front with his first goal in six games in all competitions. But the lively Kevin De Bruyne levelled in an entertaining clash.

A share of the spoils ensured Dortmund sign off from home action for 2014 remaining in the bottom three, while second-placed Wolfsburg are 11 points behind runaway leaders Bayern Munich.

Klopp next takes his side to basement club Werder Bremen on Saturday likely needing a win to ensure Dortmund do not spend the festive period rooted in the drop zone.

The hosts were given an early warning when De Bruyne was denied by goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak after exchanging passes with Vieirinha and the Belgium midfielder fired the rebound off target.

And the former Chelsea man was made to pay for that miss when the home side took the lead just eight minutes in.

Wolfsburg were caught out when Mats Hummels surged forward before finding Immobile on the left and Aubameyang slid in to finish at the back post after the Italian had picked him out.

Dortmund looked vulnerable at the back, but it was a soft goal that pegged them back after 29 minutes when Langerak should have done better with a dipping free kick from De Bruyne which the Australian misjudged.

Immobile had a golden opportunity to restore Dortmund's advantage when Sebastian Kehl, passed fit after recovering from a rib injury, fed him with a lovely ball over the top, but Diego Benaglio surged off his line to keep out the Italy international's volley.

Wolfsburg then came close just three minutes into the second half when Ivan Perisic was unselfish as he laid the ball off for the unmarked Vieirinha in the area, but Langerak narrowed the angle and made a fine save.

Dortmund continued to cause problems for the Wolfsburg defence and it took a fine save from Benaglio to keep out a strike from Immobile which looked destined for the back of the net, with Hummels' goalbound effort from the resulting corner blocked.

Wolfsburg lost Vieirinha to what appeared to be an ankle injury before Immobile came close once again when Aubameyang headed the ball down to him and he surged forward before unleashing a rasping drive which was just off target.

Immobile finally found a way through when he surged forward and beat Benaglio with a fine finish from around 20 yards out 14 minutes from time.

But there was a final twist as Naldo was left unmarked by Kehl and headed home a Ricardo Rodriguez corner to deny the hosts and keep them in the drop zone.

Four-time winners Tottenham moved into the League Cup semi-finals with an emphatic victory over Premier League rivals Newcastle United.

Young Magpies goalkeeper Jak Alnwick's error allowed Nabil Bentaleb to score, before Nacer Chadli precisely fired in just 36 seconds into the second half.

Harry Kane blasted in across Alnwick, then substitute Roberto Soldado rolled in shortly after replacing Kane.
Spurs will face League One side Sheffield United in the last four.

And being drawn against the Blades in next month's two-legged semi-final will increase their expectations of Spurs reaching a first Wembley final for six years.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has changed his team regularly this season as his side juggle their domestic ambitions with the demands of the Europa League.

The Argentine claimed in the pre-match build-up that any side he picks is not 'weakened' - and this time his players proved him right.

One point separates Tottenham and Newcastle in the top half of the Premier League, and only Alnwick's mistake - on his third senior appearance - differentiated the two sides at half-time.

The 21-year-old failed to gather Christian Eriksen's left-wing corner, allowing home midfielder Bentaleb to swoop in with an outstretched leg at the far post for his first Spurs goal.

Visiting boss Alan Pardew surprised many by naming an inexperienced side at Manchester City in the last round, but it was a tactic which paid dividends as Newcastle shocked the Premier League champions with an energetic performance.

He named another unfamiliar line-up at White Hart Lane, to non-Magpies supporters at least, due to injuries and suspensions rather than choice.

The visitors lacked the nous and punch to take the chances created against Tottenham - and they were heavily punished.

Newcastle scored 10 seconds after the restart in October's Premier League meeting between the sides at White Hart Lane, but on this occasion it was the visitors who started the second half slowly.

Belgium midfielder Chadli was allowed the space to run at a cowering Newcastle defence and strike into the bottom-right corner.
And when Kane - who Pochettino says will be selected for the England senior squad in "a matter of time" - netted his 12th goal of the season, there was little prospect of a Newcastle comeback.

Soldado took advantage of a loose Alnwick save just 73 seconds after replacing Kane for only his fourth goal of a frustrating campaign.

Then it was a case of damage limitation for the visitors, who go into Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland on the back of a heavy loss.

For the moment, New York, Beijing, Seoul, Brasilia, Ottawa and Tokyo look safe and immune to future Turkish anger. But give Mr. Erdoğan another 10 years in power and Turkiye might have another one with a range of 15,000 km by then.

There are a couple of minor problems, though. Since Turkiye is a signatory to the Missile Technology Control Regime, it may now find more difficult access to some of the “ingredients” necessary to make a missile.

Second, I am not sure whether the punishing Turkish missile should be dubbed the Attila, or the Sultan Mehmed II. The rest is history; Mark became the owner of what once had been a show car. The package consisted of the body, doors, windshield, rumble seat lid, a badly recessed firewall and a stock Ford one, grille shell, a genie frame, and a Ford 8-1/2-inch rearend. It sported the remains of a tangerine 'flake paintjob, with all work in lead. It also had a torched-out floor to channel the body, with the rumble seat lid and cowl vent welded shut and leaded.

This was what Mark delivered to MP Coachworks, who, over the next year, straightened the body, replaced damaged metal, stretched and contoured the Rootlieb hood, built the hood blisters, custom-formed the louvers, replaced the cowl vent and made a louvered decklid. The Deuces Northwest frame was fitted with a drilled and dropped Superbell axle on hairpin radius rods, with finned backing plates covering the Wilwood discs, and a Winters quick-change rearend, also with Wilwood discs. LimeWorks supplied the steering column, repro Crestliner steering wheel, e-brake handle, and column shifter.



The 331ci Chrysler Hemi was also installed during the first build. Says Mark, "Ever since I was almost killed in a 300C, I knew something I would build would have an early Hemi, and as soon as I started this project, I started the search. I found three engines, but only the last was any good. A 331 Industrial engine from a lumber mill emergency generator, it had but 500 hours on it. On a visit to my hometown of Kingston, Ontario, I tracked down Jim and Dan Rini, who I'd seen race in the past. They were Fuel dragster builders, who had crewed for Tommy Ivo on the circuit back in the day, and, now in their seventies were about ready to close up their shop, but they agreed to build my motor." What the Rinis delivered was a 0.030-inch bored Hemi with a more efficient Mopar 340 oil system, and most rotating parts replaced. It has a Vertex magneto, Hotheads intake with a Holley four-barrel (the multi-97 lookalike TPI system on a Weiand Drag Star manifold suffered continual computer problems and remains unused), and a Hotheads adaptor to fit the Mopar 727 trans.

All of which brings us back to where we came in, with Mark's realization that his car wasn't exactly what he wanted. This tied in with longtime friend Laurie Peterson announcing that he was closing his auto repair shop to build hot rods full time as Canada Customs. It also coincided with Mark's workload increasing, bouncing back and forth between Albuquerque, working on Breaking Bad, and Vancouver doing Alcatraz and Bates Motel (yes, you really did recognize the building behind the car in the pictures, it's the Bates Motel set). This meant five people got in line with Peterson before him, though it did mean he had plenty of time to plan the project.

Says Mark, "I began accumulating parts, like the '46 Olds taillights. I'd only ever seen them used on Blackie Gejeian's roadster pickup. Or the headlights, which are a combination of '37 Buick buckets and '36 Ford lenses. They mirror the hood blisters, but it took 12 pie cuts to make the buckets match the headlight rings. I had a '37 truck grille hanging on the wall that the swap meet seller I bought it from griped about because it wasn't stock. Turns out it was sectioned vertically sometime and every bar was brazed and hand filed. As the '32 and '37 grilles are similar widths, Peterson sliced the front of a '32 grille, tweaked the '37 a little, and welded the two together, using the Griffin radiator we'd used in the first build! The headlight brackets were made to match the drilled I-beam, and at first glance, on the bench, I wasn't wild about them, but on the car, plated and polished, they're outstanding."

1933 ASC Convertible - The Family Plan


It is safe to say Roy Brizio Street Rods in South San Francisco, California, has not only found the formula for building fantastic street rods, but they've perfected it. Decades of experience will do that, as does having a dedicated team of builders and go-to guys who not only work well together (some of Brizio's team have been on the job for more than 20 years), but really are the best in their respective fields.

Greg Weld was certainly well aware of the sterling reputation Brizio's has in the hot rodding community, and he wished his wife, Gwen, knew hot rodders the way he did. But, like many hot rod widows, Gwen just couldn't get into the lifestyle her husband was into, and she was happy driving around their home in Sun Valley, Idaho, in her black-on-blue 650ci convertible.

In an effort to expose her to the fun side of driving, Greg even went as far as trading her car in on a high-end R8 convertible, but she always looked back fondly on her 650. So Greg decided it was time she have her own hot rod—something she could enjoy with him and, in the process, get to know the great people Greg had come to know.

So Greg got the idea to surprise Gwen with a special birthday present: a Brizio-built '33 ASC convertible. He worked out the details with Brizio and soon the project was underway. Work started with a set of '33 rails from ASC that was outfitted by Brizio's with '32 Ford front horns, a 2-inch stretch in the wheelbase, a minor pinch up front, and a C'd rear section. Brizio's also added some material to the bottom of the frame at the quarter-panel section so what you see of the frame flows more even from front to back. To the frame a Winter's V-8 quick-change (set up with 31-spline axles and a 3.57:1 ratio) was located with ladder bars and RideTech coilover shocks, along with Panhard and antiroll bars and equipped with a set of Wilwood disc brakes.

Up front the traditional look is enhanced with a Magnum dropped axle (5 inches), Pete & Jakes hairpins and shocks, a Durant mono-leaf spring, and a pair of SO-CAL faux Buick vented brake drums. Steering is handled by a Vega-type box and an ididit tilt column, while a Moal swing pedal system would give Gwen's feet something to do. After adding a custom stainless steel gas tank from Rick's Tanks, the chassis became a roller with the addition of the knock-off-type 16- and 18-inch Sebring wheels from E-T Wheels (5.5- and 8-inchers) wrapped in Coker Excelsior Stahl tires (5.00 and 7.00).



Putting power to the pavement is a '10 LS3 (376-inch) engine backed to a 4L70E transmission. The Bow Tie was built by Don Hardy Chevrolet and features a nodular iron crank, powdered metal rods, a compression ratio of 10.7:1, and a stock GM camshaft.

Performance is aided with a set of aluminum L92 heads that gets its juice from a stock GM injection system, and exhaust exits through a custom system built by Brizio's that used a pair of Sanderson headers and stainless steel mufflers from Turbo Tone. Out front an Edelbrock water pump, an electric fan, and an aluminum radiator from Mattson's keeps everything running cool and the Chevy is topped with valve covers and an alternator from Billet Specialties as well as a Street & Performance air cleaner. All told the engine produces 480 hp at 5,750 rpm.

Many folks have spent an incalculable amount of hours prepping cars for paint, but Greg wisely went with a convertible body from American Speed Company that all but eliminates the need to spend excessive time (and money) getting the body straight before the color is laid out. Jack Hagemann Jr. fabricated the aluminum hood for the car, and a Nottingham Reproductions grille (chopped 1.5 inches by Brizio's Jack Stratton) was also employed.

Once the body was ready, it was shipped to Darryl Hollenbeck's Vintage Color Studio in Concord, California, for the application of its PPG Envirobase dark blue paint (a not-so-subtle ode to the Phil Remington clone car Greg had seen with Brizio at the Grand National Roadster Show). Once back at Brizio's, '46 Ford taillights were wired up (by Brizio's Jim Vickery) as were a pair of Arrow headlights, and all the car's chrome was handled by Sherm's Custom Plating.

Another part of the well-tested Brizio formula is the addition of Sid Chavers to create an interior. Chavers has demonstrated throughout the years the perfect eye to balance what is needed for any given interior project without going overboard.

For the Weld convertible, he used oxblood-colored leather to stitch a bench seat that features individual bucket seating for both driver and passenger. The basic pleat design is complemented by the gathered pocket in the door panels as well as the unique door pull—a single hanging knotted strap.

The dash is simple, too, with a pair of Classic Instrument gauges (a speedo/tach combo and their Quad four-in-one gauge) mounted above controls for the Vintage Air A/C system. The only other bit of polished aluminum is found in the Juliano's banjo steering wheel, the tall Lokar shifter, and the cup holders in the center console.

Revealing the secret of the car build to Gwen occurred a few days before the 2014 L.A. Roadsters Father's Day Show, when Greg convinced her to stop by Brizio Street Rods to check out the group of rodders getting ready to travel south to the show.

Walking into the shop's showroom, Gwen was stopped in her tracks by a black-on-blue convertible with a big red bow on top. Everyone in the shop yelled “happy birthday” and she was overcome with surprise. Greg and Gwen then jumped in the car and drove to the show in Southern California in her new ride alongside all the other hot rodders, stopping for lunch along the way, with Gwen getting to know everyone.

Over the weekend she took an active roll in checking out all the other cars in the show, and quickly formed her own opinions on what she like and didn't (because, as everyone knows, forming an opinion is the basis of every hot rodder!).

After the show, the couple drove back up the California coastline by themselves along the Pacific Coast Highway and Highway One with stops at Big Sur and Carmel (some of the most scenic California has to offer). Greg had recently wanted to start a '40 Ford pickup project, and now Gwen offers her opinion and thoughts on what the truck should sit and look like.

After keeping the secret of the build for two years, Greg is happy he and his wife can now cruise together, and we can believe Gwen may have forgotten all about the BMW!

Winter Comfort Food That Balances Your Body's pH


Sweet Potato

This delicious, sweet and starchy vegetable tastes like a guilty pleasure, but it’s actually a queen among superfoods. It contains high levels of carotenoids, which your body needs to make vitamin A. Sweet potatoes are also high in vitamin C, vitamin B6, manganese copper, and potassium. One baked sweet potato even provides 26 percent of your daily fiber requirement. For an easy and warming winter treat, cut a sweet potato into half-inch slices and steam them until they’re just soft. Garnish with a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg. And, since fat helps your body absorb carotenoids, you can feel good about indulging.

Cabbage

Cabbage is high in vitamin C, which is beneficial for immune support, and vitamin K, vitamin B6, manganese, potassium, iron, antioxidants such as polyphenols, and plenty of fiber. The nutrients in cabbage are highest when you eat it raw or only lightly cooked, but they’re preserved even when cabbage is fermented or made into old-fashioned sauerkraut the traditional way. I love cabbage in vegetable soups for a hearty fiber-rich stock.

Beets

Beets contain potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and vitamins A, B, and C. They’re also high in beta carotene, beta cyanine, folic acid, and fiber. They’re cleansing to the liver and work to purify the blood. Naturally sweet, beets are delicious roasted, pickled, or shredded raw in salads. These gorgeous red beauties can stain your urine pink, a sign that your stomach acid is nice and low. And, yellow and orange beets offer a variety of phytonutrients.

Persimmon

One of my favorite sweet fruits, persimmon, or Diospyros, is called the “fruit of the gods.” My grandfather grew persimmons, so I learned to love them at an early age. They deserve superfood status thanks to high amounts of vitamins C and A, as well as beta carotene and heart-healthy lycopene. Persimmons also contain manganese, iron, and calcium. You can eat this fruit raw, but be sure that it’s completely ripe—unripe persimmons are bitter and leave a fuzzy taste on your tongue. A good test for ripeness is a gentle tug on the stem. It if pops off easily, the fruit is ripe. Try persimmons as a fresh fruit, in a smoothie, and in salads.

Collards

If you live in the South, you know what a collard green is. A New Year’s Day tradition says to eat hoppin’ John, a dish of collards and black-eyed peas, to bring luck for the coming year. This super dark leafy green is high in vitamins A, C, and K, plus has lots of B vitamins, calcium, manganese, iron, and even a nice shot of protein. Collards are perfect for winter because the hearty leaf needs to cook longer. They’re delicious sautéed with onions and garlic, or added to stews or soups. Or, try using a large collard leaf as a wrap, filled with hummus, avocado, and sprouts, for a healthier alternative to bread.
