If you think a diesel plug-in hybrid is an expensive proposition, wait until you hear the details on just revealed Audi A7 Sportback H-Tron Quattro. The "H" H-Tron, as you might guess, is hydrogen, to say hello to a new concept that combines a plug-in battery system with a hydrogen fuel cell. Yes, exactly.

Let's start with the numbers. On the side of the plug-in, the new H-Tron has a lithium-ion battery 8.8 kWh that can power the car for up to 31 miles on battery power. For electric motors on both axles - it is a Quattro, after all, but a hybrid by-road with the management of the distribution of electronic torque - A7 H-Tron uses a hydrogen fuel cell and four H2 tanks to provide about 62 miles (!) per equivalent gallon. Audi shows the overall performance of the fuel cell stack is "as high as 60 percent," while the electric motors run at 95 percent efficiency.
