Porsche Wants a 458 Italia Fighter But Doesn't Have the Time

Earlier this month, it became pretty clear that Porsche has too much on its plate at the moment to develop a Ferrari 458 Italia fighter. But Porsche is still claiming that the project isn’t dead, just delayed. Aside from not wanting to create an internal competitor of sorts to the technological masterpiece that is the 918 Spyder, Porsche simply doesn’t have the time to work on a new halo model. Cancelled is not the right way (to say this)," stated Porsche R&D boss Wolfgang Hatz.

“I think it is not the right thing to do to produce the next car right after this one (the 918). It will take some time." Dubbed the 988, this mid-engined supercar would theoretically challenge the 458 as well as the Lamborghini Huracan, but here’s the thing: parent company Volkswagen needs for Porsche to keep churning out mainstream models, such as the new Macan and upcoming next-gen Panamera, because of their high profitability. VW then invests those profits back not only to Porsche, but to its other brands as well. That’s how valuable Porsche is these days. It's come a long way in a relatively short period of time.

And the 988 isn’t the only project on ice at the moment. That rumored junior Panamera, called the Pajun, is also on hold for the foreseeable future. On the other hand, there’s huge investment happening in Porsche's Le Mans racing program. Consider it a tradeoff.
